How is Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrated?
During Ganesh Chaturthi, people install clay idols of Lord Ganesha in their homes and public places. The idols are beautifully decorated and worshipped with offerings such as flowers, sweets, and fruits. On the last day of the festival, which is known as Ananta Chaturdashi, the idols are immersed in water bodies, symbolizing the departure of Lord Ganesha back to his heavenly abode.
The festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm, including processions, music, dance, and cultural events. It holds immense significance in Maharashtra, India, where large public pandals (temporary structures) are erected to house elaborate idols of Lord Ganesha. Devotees gather to seek his blessings and partake in the festivities.
Ganesh Chaturthi Rituals
- Avahana and Pran Pratishtha Ritual – This ritual is performed to sanctify the Ganpati idol. This is the first step taken by the devotees in which Lord Ganesha is reverently invited with mantra recitation, and Pran Pratishtha done (life is evoked within the idol).
- Shodashopachara Ganesh Chaturthi Ritual – The next step involves the tradition of 16-step puja wherein, in Sanskrit – ‘Shodasha’ means 16 and Upachara means ‘devoutly offering the lord’. Having washed Ganesha’s feet, the idol is bathed in milk, ghee, honey, curd, and sugar (called Panchamrit Snan) followed by scented oil and then Ganga jal. Then new Vastra (clothes) are offered; along with flowers, unbroken rice (Akshata), garland, sindoor, and Chandan. The idol is worshipped religiously by offering Modak, betel leaves, coconut (Naivedya) lighting incense sticks, Diyas, chanting hymns, and mantras.
- Ganesh Chaturthi Uttarpuja Ritual – This ritual is performed before Visarjan. With great joy and devotion, people of all age groups participate in the festival. Be it in pandals, temples or homes, Ganesha Chaturthi is observed with immense happiness. People sing, dance, and light up fireworks. With the beautiful chant of mantras, aarti, and flowers, Ganesha is worshipped to bid farewell. The sequence of steps involved is Niranjan aarti, Pushpanjali arpan, and Pradakshina.
- Ganpati Visarjan in Ganesh Chaturthi
This is the last ritual in which the Ganesha idol is immersed in water. As they make their way to the immersion, people can be heard chanting, “Ganapati Bappa Morya, Purchya Varshi Laukariya” (Hail Lord Ganpati, come quickly next year).
Throughout the ten days, people visit public celebrations and houses of friends and family for celebrations. Cultural events with music and dance performances are organized, and people enjoy the festivities. Devotees also donate clothes and food to the needy and get involved in other acts of charity.
