Chandraghanta Mata Ki Katha
Maa Chandraganta was known as Devi Sati in her previous birth. In this incarnation, she was married to Lord Shiva and then later sacrificed her life when her father insulted him. She was then born again as Parvati, the daughter of mountains, and observed severe penance to marry Lord Shiva. Due to her severe penance and continued dedication, Lord Shiva agreed to marry her. When the marriage preparations were in full swing with everyone so involved and happy about the occasion, on the day of their marriage, Lord Shiva arrived with a huge, but strange marriage procession. Ghosts, demons, goblins, ghouls, etc were all part of this unusual marriage procession. Lord Shiva, himself, had snakes around his neck and his whole body was smeared with ash.
Maa Parvati’s relatives including her mother Maina were left shocked upon seeing such a terrifying form of Lord Shiva and almost everyone fainted out of pure horror. Maa Parvati got worried and feared that her family would be highly embarrassed because of this situation. So, she immediately transformed herself into a new ferocious-looking avatar of Maa Chandraghanta. This was a frightening sight and she looked as terrifying as Lord Shiva. Maa Chandraghanta’s complexion turned golden and she now had ten arms. She carried a Trishula (Trident) in two hands and a Kamandal (Watering Pot) in another hand. Also, Maa Chandraghanta carried a Gada (Mace), a bow and arrow, a sword, a Ghanta (Bell) and a Kamala (Lotus).
In this terrifying form, Maa Chandraghanta approached Lord Shiva and convinced him to take a noble form. Lord Shiva agreed and transformed himself into a handsome prince. Finally, Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati’s marriage took place with all the prayers and rituals.
According to another story as per mythology, Mother Durga took the form of Mother Chandraghanta when the terror of demon Mahishasura started causing havoc in Heaven. Mahishasura was fighting a fierce battle with the Devtas of Heaven. Because Mahishasura wanted to get the throne of Devraj Indra and establish his dominance over the heavenly world. Devtas became worried and approached Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh.
The Trinity listened to them and expressed anger. It is said that due to this anger, an energy came out from the mouth of the Trinity, and from the same energy a goddess was incarnated, whose name is Maa Chandraghanta. Lord Shankar gave his trident, Vishnu his chakra, Indra his bell, and Surya his glory, sword, and lion to that goddess. After this, Mother Chandraghanta killed Mahishasura and protected the gods and heaven.
