Skandamata Devi
Worshipping the mother of Skanda, Skandamata Devi on the Fifth day of Navratri Pooja has great significance. She represents peace and tranquility. She is the Goddess of purity. By worshipping her with full devotion, worshippers can leave their sorrows behind and achieve great and divine contentment in life. In this manifestation of maa Skandmata, Durga has four arms. She holds Kartikeya (Skanda) in one hand, holds a lotus in the second and the third hand, and blesses her devotees with the fourth hand. She rides a lion and sits on a lotus in a state of meditation (due to which she is also called Padmasana Devi). Kartikeya is also known as Lord Murugan in South India.
Skandamata Story
The birth of Kartikeya is an interesting story. After Sati immolated herself, Shiva became detached from worldly affairs and started practicing austere penance as an ascetic. At the same time, the gods (devas) were under attack from demons (asuras) being led by Tarakasur.
As per Hindu mythology, Tarakasur was a demon who pleased Lord Brahma with his great devotion and extremely tough penance. He asked Lord Brahma to make him immortal. Lord Brahma blessed him but with the condition that he can only be assassinated by the son of Lord Shiva. Tarakasur agreed as he knew that Lord Shiva would never get married. Tarkasur started tormenting the people on the earth. Fearing that Tarakasur would cause huge destruction and attack them as well, the devatas requested Lord Shiva to get married. He agreed and married Goddess Parvati. The child born to them was blessed by all Gods, had six faces, and was called Lord Kartikeya/ Skand Kumar. He grew up to be a handsome, intelligent, and powerful youth and demolished Tarkasur. Devi Skandmata is a symbol of the mother-son relationship.

Skandamata Aarti
