Katyayani Devi – कात्यायनी देवी – Mantra, Story, Stotra, Kavach, Aarti

Maa Katyayani Devi (कात्यायनी देवी) is one among the nine forms of the Goddess Durga and is worshipped as Her sixth form on the Sixth Day of Navratri 2019. Goddess Parvati took the form of Goddess Katyayani to destroy demon Mahishasura. Goddess Katyayani is the fiercest manifestation of ‘Shakti’, the divine female power, as she appears as a Warrior Goddess.

The Goddess appears in various Holy Scriptures as a symbol of victory of good over evil. Katyayani Maa has got her name from Sage Katyayan, whose daughter she was. Sage Katyayan was also the first person who worshipped her as the manifestation of Maa Durga. Seated riding a powerful lion, She is depicted carrying a sword and the lotus flower in Her right hands while keeping Her left hands in Abhaya and Varada mudras.

Story of Sixth Day of Navaratri – Goddess Katyayani

To destroy demon Mahishasura, Goddess Parvati took the form of Goddess Katyayani. According to Hindu mythology and beliefs, there existed a demon Mahishasura, whose atrocities created havoc and were assuming gigantic proportions. He even aimed at destructing the earth and the gods (Devtas). All the Gods (Devtas) then prayed Goddess Durga to save them from him. Goddess Durga then assumed the form of Katyayani, who, equipped with powers and weapons from Gods, confronted the demon. He began changing his forms, one of which was that of a buffalo. Goddess Durga sprang on the back of Mahishasura from Her lion and struck his head and killed him.
